Industry Standards & Education:
Contributed to every major geothermal standard and authored the training programs for key industry certifications. We continue to teach the courses for Certified Geo Designer (CGD), Certified Geo Inspector (CGI), and Accredited Installer (AI).
Technical Innovation:
Our team has helped define the modern practice of geothermal and ambient loop design. Garen Ewbank developed industry-standard methods for characterizing ground conductivity and diffusivity, later patenting advanced methodologies to improve these processes.
Cary Smith, Mark Smith, and Bill O’Donnell helped bring the ambient, one-pipe temperature loop concept into the modern era through their pioneering work at Colorado Mesa University.

The GreyEdge Group Founded
The GreyEdge Group was originally founded as something intentionally different: a collective of the Thermal Energy Networks (TEN) industry’s most accomplished individual practitioners, brought together around a shared conviction that TENs represented the future of district-scale decarbonization. Our founding members include the engineer who pioneered in-situ thermal conductivity testing in 1994, the hydronics specialist who brought the one
pipe ATL into the modern era, and a team that has contributed significantly to every major geothermal standard and created the industry’s certification curricula. Over the past decade, what began as a network of collaborating specialists has been forged into a focused, aligned team, one whose collective experience designing, building, and operating real ATL systems is unmatched anywhere in North America.
The result is a firm whose principals have managed more than 1,000 geothermal projects, have overseen the installation of over 80,000 tons of installed heat pump capacity, and maintained operating relationships with flagship systems that have been running continuously for 15 to 18 years. When we say we have real-world experience, we mean the kind that comes from watching systems perform, and underperform,
across every climate, building type, and institutional context over decades. We paid our dues years ago to learn the lessons that many of our competitors are just now getting to. All of our projects will benefit from that hard earned wisdom.
